SUNY Broome allowed 43 runs over two games on Tuesday, losing both ends of a road doubleheader.
The Hornets and Generals played the twin bill at Veterans Memorial Park in Little Falls, NY. Broome could muster up just three runs across the day. The game one final was 20-3, and the nationally ranked Generals shut out Broome 23-0 in game two. Each contest was five innings in length.
Game 1: SUNY Broome 3, Herkimer 20
Herkimer positioned itself well for the win early, scoring nine runs in the bottom of the 2nd. SUNY Broome answered with a run in the top of the 3rd but Herkimer scored five in the bottom half. The Hornets plated two in the 4th, but a six-run bottom of the inning for the Generals made the score 20-3. The Hornets were closed out in the top of the 5th and the 10-run rule went into effect.
The Hornets managed just five hits in game one. The offensive showing was highlighted by Nicholas Ragonese, who was 1-2 with a two-run home run. Zechariah Clouston was 1-1 with a double and a run scored. Connor Normile Jr. went 1-2 and scored a run. Santino Michitti contributed a hit and drew a walk. Jacob McTigue had the fifth Broome hit.
The Hornets' pitching was roughed up to the tune of four Herkimer home runs. Joseph Chermak started and allowed 10 earned runs despite walking just two batters and striking out three. Evan Persbacker was the lone reliever, and he allowed nine earned runs despite walking just three and striking out three.
Game 2: SUNY Broome 0, Herkimer 23
Herkimer continued to score early in the second game of the day. The Generals opened with three runs in the 1st, six runs in the 2nd, and two runs in the 3rd. Then Herkimer exploded for 12 runs in the bottom of the 4th before putting the Hornets away in the 5th to close things out. SUNY Broome was held to two hits in the shutout.
Clouston logged another hit to continue his consistently effective stretch at the plate. Persbacker had the other hit.
Michael Albertine started on the bump for SUNY Broome and went 3.1 innings deep. Ragonese and Remmington Lounsberry followed in relief.
After getting swept at #11 Herkimer and falling to 7-15, SUNY Broome will be on the road again on Thursday at Columbia-Greene. The Hornets executed a sweep of a doubleheader with the Twins just days ago.
