Broome lost a pair of games at home over the weekend, falling 73-48 against Clinton CC and 82-74 against North Country CC.
The Hornets were at home in the Baldwin Gymnasium for a two-game weekend, and started with Clinton CC on Saturday. In that one, Broome moved and shot the ball very effectively in the first half, racing out to a five-point lead at halftime and holding the Clinton offense to just 31 points. Much of the first-half success was impacted by the season debut of Conor Holland, who had yet to play due to injury. Holland scored nine points and added four rebounds, two assists, and two steals on the day.
Broome's offense sputtered in the second half, however, and totaled just 12 points while the Cougars put up 42 points. Clinton also outrebounded the Hornets en route to their victory. Axell Camacho-Cintron also had a strong game with 12 points, two rebounds, and three assists. Joseph Miller added eight points and was five-of-six on free throws. Jean Senatus led the team with eight rebounds.
Broome returned to the Baldwin Gymnasium on Sunday to host North Country CC. In that game, both teams shot the ball well in the first half. Broome and North Country traded baskets toward the end of the first half, and a buzzer-beating three-pointer by the Saints sent the game into halftime with a 40-40 tie. The second half was relatively evenly-paced as well, 42 points were scored by the Saints and 34 were scored by the Hornets, which ended up being the difference. Although Broome outrebounded, had better shooting percentages from the field, from three, and from the free-throw line than North Country, the Saints forced the Hornets into more turnovers and capitalized by scoring points off of those turnovers.
The Hornets had five players score in double figures in the contest. The Hornets were led in points by Jean Senatus with 17, also adding 8 rebounds. Quavir Coleman had an exceptional game, providing 14 points, nine rebounds, and six assists. Ibrahima Sow totaled 12 points while Antonio Maria and Axell Camacho-Cintron scored 11 apiece.
The two losses on the weekend dropped Broome to 3-8 on the season. They fall to 3-6 in Region 3 games. With Saturday's win, Clinton improved to 7-3 on the year. They also won their next game on Sunday to improve to 8-3 and 5-3 in Region 3. With the win on Sunday, North Country improved to 7-6 overall and 5-4 in Region 3 contests.
The Hornets will take a break from play until they return home to the Baldwin Gymnasium on Wednesday, January 10 at 6:00 p.m. against SUNY ESF.
