Broome Splits Weekend Games With Home Win, Road Loss

The men's basketball team won 84-75 at home against Jefferson CC on Saturday before falling on the road to Finger Lakes CC on Sunday, 77-67.

Sunday marked the sixth game since the Hornets returned to play from a one month break in the action from December to January. Broome has gone 3-3 in that stretch with two wins at home and one on the road, and one loss at home and two on the road. The Hornets have been playing much more consistent and competitive basketball throughout the start of the second half and will look to continue that trend through the spring semester. In these last six games, every win has been by nine or more points, and each loss has been by 10 points or less, including two OT defeats.

In the first game of the weekend, at home against the Cannoneers on Saturday, Broome controlled the flow of play in both halves en route to a 10 point halftime lead and a comfortable nine point win. The Hornets were led in scoring by 21 points apiece from Antonio Maria and Quavir Coleman. 10 of Coleman's points came from the charity stripe as he was 10-10. Coleman also added 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals. Maria added 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block to his 21 points. Connor Green had 10 points and 5 rebounds, while Conor Holland was the Hornets' fourth double-digit scorer with 13 points and 3 assists. Broome made an incredible 32 of 36 free-throw attempts, good for 89%, a result of their ability to attack the basket and draw contact throughout the game. 

On Sunday, in game two of the weekend at Finger Lakes CC, Broome was outshot by the Lakers from the field, from three, and from the charity stripe in an effort where they trailed from the beginning and mounted multiple comebacks to trim the defecit, but could never get over the hump. Maria continued his scoring with a team-high 15 points in addition to 3 rebounds and 2 steals. Green provided 10 points and 4 rebounds, Jean Senatus picked up 11 points and 4 rebounds, and Holland had 12 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 steals.

In this recent six game stretch, Maria has per-game averages of 20.5 points, 4.2 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.3 steals. Coleman is next in scoring with 14.2 points, 4 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 2.7 steals. Holland has averaged 11.8 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 2.8 assists. Big men Senatus and Green have been influential with respective averages of 12.3 points, 5.5 rebounds, 0.7 blocks and 10.2 points, 7.7 rebounds, 0.8 blocks. 

Broome moves to 6-11 on the season and 4-6 in MSAC play, with a 5-9 record in Region 3 games. There are eight games left on the docket for the regular season. The Hornets will travel to Dryden, NY on Thursday for a 5:00 PM date with the Panthers of Tompkins Cortland CC.
